Will US electricity generation from natural gas in calendar year 2026 exceed the 2024 level by more than the combined increase from wind, solar, and nuclear over the same period, per EIA Electric Power Monthly?

Gas-fired generation supplies the largest share of incremental US electricity demand through 2026 because turbines can be sited and built faster than any alternative at AI-datacenter timelines.

Gas is the bridge fuel for AI load

AI datacenter load growth arrives on a 2-4 year horizon while nuclear takes a decade and renewables plus storage face interconnection and timeline constraints, leaving combined-cycle and peaker gas as the marginal dispatchable resource. Gas burn for power generation rises faster than any other fuel's contribution to incremental generation, and gas capacity additions and backlogs climb.

Gas supply tightness, not non-gas buildout, caps gas's share

Shale depletion in mature basins and rising LNG export demand are tightening the gas market even as data-center power needs grow, a squeeze that could slow gas's incremental generation growth rather than accelerate it. If dry gas supply struggles to keep pace with export and power demand, higher prices could constrain gas-fired generation additions relative to 2024, letting wind, solar, and nuclear close more of the gap than the yes side expects. This side would be shown right if gas's 2024-2026 generation increase comes in below the combined increase from wind, solar, and nuclear.
