Will BLS CPS data show the employment-population ratio for workers aged 20-24 fall by at least 1.5 percentage points from its 2025 average to the trailing-12-month average ending in a month on or before November 2027?

AI adoption removes entry-level tasks faster than new entry roles appear, so young-worker employment deteriorates measurably more than the overall labor market.

AI replaces entry-level white-collar work

Firms deploy LLMs and agents on the routine, fully computer-mediated tasks that historically filled junior headcount, so they stop backfilling entry-level roles. Young workers in high-AI-exposure occupations show larger employment drops than young workers in low-exposure fields, while older workers show little difference across exposure levels, suggesting age itself amplifies the effect. On this view, the 20-24 employment-population ratio falls by at least 1.5 percentage points from its 2025 average, a decline that prime-age and senior workers do not share.

Remote work, not AI, explains weak youth hiring

The youth hiring problem is misattributed to AI: the real channel is that remote work removes the in-person exposure that builds early careers, so workers who show up in person gain a relative advantage over those who do not. Separately, when AI tooling lowers the cost of software development but demand for new features still exceeds available engineering cycles, developer productivity rises and headcount grows rather than shrinks, since the bottleneck is cycles, not ideas. On this view, the youth employment-population ratio recovers to within 0.5 percentage points of its 2025 average even as AI adoption keeps rising, holding well short of the 1.5-point decline the question tests.
