Will the EIA say in February 2027 that US business power use will rise at least 2.5 percent in 2027?

How it settles

Read Table 7a line ELCCP_US in the EIA's February 2027 Short-Term Energy Outlook and compare the summed 2027 monthly commercial electricity sales to summed 2026 figures, at or above 2.5 percent growth counts as yes. US Energy Information Administration, Short-Term Energy Outlook, Table 7a (U.S. Electricity Industry Overview)

The exact question and the full rule

Will the EIA's February 2027 Short-Term Energy Outlook have US commercial electricity sales for 2027 growing at or above 2.5% from 2026?

Read the Short-Term Energy Outlook the US Energy Information Administration releases on February 9, 2027 (the archive workbook feb27_base.xlsx, Table 7a, line ELCCP_US) and compare the sum of the twelve monthly figures for 2027 of the retail sales of electricity to the commercial sector in the United States with the sum of those for 2026 in the same workbook. The answer is yes if growth is at or above 2.5%; no if it is below 2.5%.

If the source is late or silent: If the EIA has not posted the February 2027 workbook in its archive by February 16, 2027, or the table lacks a line or a month the rule reads, the test is inconclusive, and the Result says what was read and what was missing; a later outlook does not change the reading.

If no

Gas supply tightness, not non-gas buildout, caps gas's share

Expects tight gas supply from shale decline and LNG exports to slow gas power additions, keeping growth under 2.5 percent.

If yes

Gas is the bridge fuel for AI load

Expects gas plants to keep filling the AI data center power gap, pushing commercial electricity use growth to 2.5 percent or more.

Gas supply tightness, not non-gas buildout, caps gas's share

Michael SpykerNov 20

Because official forecasts have understated how much domestic gas demand (especially from data centers) would grow, LNG developers planned export capacity assuming ample surplus gas would remain available; as AI-driven demand materializes…

Gas is the bridge fuel for AI load

AI infrastructure requires significant electricity, which is increasingly powered by natural gas as backup and baseload generation. Major financial institutions and tech companies are financing AI buildout, creating structural demand for natural gas.

What would change the Call
  • A revised data center demand forecast, weather path, or gas price path in the EIA's February 2027 outlook would change this.

The thesis

Will US electricity generation from natural gas in calendar year 2026 exceed the 2024 level by more than the combined increase from wind, solar, and nuclear over the same period, per EIA Electric Power Monthly?

Gas-fired generation supplies the largest share of incremental US electricity demand through 2026 because turbines can be sited and built faster than any alternative at AI-datacenter timelines.
